Essential Job Duties:
The Department of World Languages & Cultures at North Carolina State University invites applications for a Director of Undergraduate Advising. This position is a fulltime, 12 month appointment.

The successful candidate will provide academic advice to undergraduate World Languages & Cultures majors, will be in charge of study abroad advising, will coordinate with the Director of Undergraduate Programs on student issues, and will facilitate coherence, stability, and consistency to the academic program. The successful candidate will also be responsible for training faculty advisors. In addition to advising all World Languages majors (c.175), the Director will recruit new World Language majors, onboard, and do orientation for all new majors (mostly internal and external transfers), handle academic appeals, serve as department graduation clearance officer, and represent the department on college committees as DUA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advise students about completion of World Languages curriculum requirements.
  • Help students define academic goals and gain an understanding of how to achieve them.
  • Understand and communicate to students the implications of the various program plans and degree progress.
  • Help students develop their academic focus within the major.
  • Keep abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintain connections with student service staff across campus.
  • Understand, interpret, and enforce University, College, and Departmental policies while exploring academic and professional options.
  • Help students make transitions and access full range of university resources.
  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for students and staff with interest in or questions about our academic programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the advising and registration process on a continuing basis and put forth recommendations for process improvement.
  • Coordinate individual language section advisors and departmental recruitment, including attending university, college and departmental recruitment events as required.
  • Represent the department at New Student and Transfer Student Orientations throughout the year.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of judgment, decision-making, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to build knowledge of University, College and departmental policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • An understanding of World Languages as an academic discipline.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Suite and instructional software (Moodle, Zoom, etc.)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest and foundation in World Languages & Cultures (e.g., multiple undergraduate courses, major, or minor in the discipline).
  • An understanding of university structure and administration, including the relationship between student affairs units and academic units.
  • Experience working with academic programs, preferably in college student affairs, counseling or a related field.
  • Professional advising experience in a university setting or experience as a graduate assistant in an academic advising role.
  • A record of success in working with undergraduates.
