VSU Student and Academic Affairs is dedicated to using a holistic approach to academic excellence and student success and engagement. The division emphasizes leadership and professional development, career planning, and experiential learning. It focuses on developing student leaders who are more engaged with their learning, have the soft skills necessary to be successful in their careers, and are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to be globally competitive while remaining civically engaged.
The purpose of this position is centered in using an Intrusive Academic Advising model, advisors will build relationships with new and current students to support student success and retention. Advisors should be able to assess student’s stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and assist students to determine suitable developmental goals. Advisors may also use proactive advising to evaluate student academic records and recommend appropriate courses, potential majors, and careers.
Minimum Qualifications
Academic advisor of should have excellent interpersonal, analytical and written and oral communications skills. This person should have the working knowledge of student services in higher education, and be able to assess student needs. Academic advisor should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little supervision. They must also have demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills, while paying attention to detail and directing others toward completed actions. They should have the ability to work in a team environment, and perform effectively both independently and as a collaborator with diverse campus administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
This incumbent should also have an undergraduate degree along with at least 2 years in an higher educational environment.
