College of Arts & Sciences Academic Advisor

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To perform duties essential for the academic development, retention and graduation of students. To assist students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, building relevant competencies, and setting goals. To present academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Through a collaborative process with students, assess educational and career objectives and foster personal initiative and responsibility in meeting these objectives.
  • Advise students on a variety of academic issues such as courses that will satisfy general education and degree requirements, selection of a major field of study, scholastic and probationary problems, and College (or Department) policies and procedures. Maintain digital records of student meetings and outcomes.
  • Assist students with course registration, schedule planning and adjustments.
  • Monitor academic progress of students; evaluate satisfactory progress toward degree; help students interpret their Degree Audit Report (DARS); identify current and potential needs or problem areas and identify appropriate campus resources.
  • Assist students with academic and non-academic problem solving. Provide general campus information. Refer students to appropriate campus resources e.g. financial aid, disability services, academic support, international student services, student health services, counseling services, and career planning and placement.
  • Prepare, update, and finalize graduation lists.
  • Evaluate transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to specific degree programs.
  • Interpret and explain college and university policies and procedures; participate in preparation of orientations and assist in presenting academic information to new students during orientation.
  • Participate in and support recruitment and retention related office initiatives.
  • Attend weekend functions and hold evening hours as needed.
  • Participate in organized and self-directed professional development activities
  • Complete other projects and duties as assigned.

8:00am to 5:00pm

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in related field
1 year work experience in higher ed

Anticipated Hiring Range

Pay commensurate with education and experience
Hiring Range: $43,000-$45,000 Annual
Grade: GGS-008
