Department Summary

Our mission is to generate, integrate, and disseminate knowledge in a learner-centered environment. We advance domains of knowledge in information science, library science, data science, computing and technology systems, learning and cognition, human performance and linguistics.

Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to effectively advise masters level graduate students on their degree and program requirements as well as provide support to academic departments, lead or develop student focused initiatives, and contribute to the success and mission of the College of Information.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and two years’ of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong presentation skills.
Strong problem solving skills.
Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.
Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with UNT Systems, like EIS- Peoplesoft, EAB – Navigate, u.Achieve, Salesforce, Perceptive Content. Knowledge of UNT and the College of Information and its policies. Experience advising graduate students and working with international populations.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties:

  • Advises students on degree, program, graduate school, and university requirements, policies, and procedures in appointments and through email communication.
  • Reviews and approves the processing of student course requests. Completes other administrative tasks that include signing forms, approving students for graduation, reviewing internship applications etc.
  • Works with department faculty, staff, and administrators on academic policy issues and student concerns, providing information on academic catalog, graduate school policies, and university requirements
  • Maintains advising records from appointments and email communications with students. References them as needed. – (Essential)
  • Assists with graduate commencement, participates/represents in events.
  • Assists with the training and supervision of student assistants on special projects, enrollment procedures and policies, and student/program questions.
  • Partners with and/or refers students to other university resources to resolve conflicts (C.A.R.E. team, Dean of Students) or provide enhanced student services (Career Center).

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 p.m., some weekends as needed.
