General Information:

JMU’s School of Professional & Continuing Education collaborates with individuals, business, and communities through transformative educational programs and experiences. SPCE offers a range of programs, including youth camps, adult degree completion, professional and workforce development, and lifelong learning, as well as partners with academic units across JMU to support a number of online or off-campus degree and certificate programs. SPCE’s Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) seeks a new Director to guide the program, including program development and administration, fiscal management, curriculum development, community and university relations, community outreach, and membership and marketing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

#1: Program Development and Administration, including Fiscal Management

  • Conduct research to determine the viability of programming and identify potential partners for hosting off-campus programming
  • Facilitate and support program, course, and instructor evaluations
  • Identify demographics of LLI members and develop respective strategies and processes for enhancing diversity within the institute
  • Manage day-to-day activities and operations including staff supervision
  • Monitor the technology needs of the program and arrange for training as needed
  • Plan, develop, implement, and coordinate a variety of educational programs designed exclusively for an adult audience
  • Recognize and develop talent among members, including the development of volunteer leadership
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the advisory board and all standing committees
  • Interpret and promote board and committee adherence to all University policies
  • Set the tone and facilitate the development of a community of learners
  • Ensure that all University Policies and Procedures are adhered to while managing and being responsible for day-to-day program operations
  • Identify and develop new funding sources
  • Inspire and lead volunteers in the development and implementation of fundraising campaigns

#2: Curriculum Development

  • Ensure curriculum is varied, balanced, and responsive to the desires of the membership
  • Facilitate program development in advance of each term
  • Oversee scheduling and program coordination
  • Work with the Curriculum Committee and others to produce course catalogs

#3: Community and University Relations

  • Enhance relationships with campus and community partners
  • Meet with prospective members and help develop avenues for attracting new members
  • Partner with community organizations and agencies to co-sponsor classes and activities
  • Represent Lifelong Learning in the community and within the University
  • Serve on both community and University committees

#4: Community Outreach

  • Develop programs to attract diverse and underserved populations
  • Facilitate potential alliances between members and community organizations and needs
  • Help develop promotional materials, course catalogs, and newsletter content
  • Participate in the regional and national network of lifelong learning programs
  • Serve as LLI’s representative on campus, within the local community, and among civic and community groups, funders, local governments, and other lifelong learning programs

#5: Membership and Marketing

  • Develop tools and processes to assess and respond member needs
  • Develop systems, policies, and procedures to improve member satisfaction and increase member enrollment and retention
  • Expand the lifelong learning audience through new programming, additional locations, and continued development of online learning programs
  • Support and facilitate recruitment of new members

Qualifications:

  • Program management experience including: program design, implementation, and evaluation; budget development and/or implementation; project management.
  • Significant experience at the director level or equivalent
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to work with a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication including presentation experience to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Fundraising and/or grant writing experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred
  • Management of a membership-based organization preferred
