Job Summary
Advises and coaches students in the College’s Middle College Program. Guides students in the development of a comprehensive education plan that meets high school graduation requirements and student college goals. Creates and maintains student records, transcripts, graduation plans, grades, and transcript evaluations. Acts as the primary contact for the Middle College program and regularly communicates with partners within the high schools.
Essential Duties
- Advises students from pre-enrollment to graduation, and monitors and assists students in the transition to post-secondary education and/or training.
- Assists students with developing meaningful education plans compatible with high school requirements, career and life goals, and curriculum standards.
- Evaluates transcripts and other applicable documents, and advises and provides support for students regarding admissions and registration, diploma completion, and graduation status.
- Serves as program liaison. Monitors advising processes, and tracks student activities such as student contacts, ensuring that students are receiving the necessary services and referrals. Communicates with school administrators, and coordinates school and information access for MHCC staff.
- Develops and facilitates various aspects of new student orientations to help develop decision-making skills, awareness of educational resources, and reinforce self-direction in educational planning.
- Administers intake sessions for students. Follows up with school districts on students who prompt eligibility concerns.
- Works to ensure that students maintain satisfactory academic progress and provides supplementary assistance to those who need additional support. Ensures that students are aware of important College related deadlines and milestones and provides contacts for additional resources as needed.
- Acts as the primary contact for high school partners for the Middle College Program. Works with counselors and other staff to ensure that students are supported and meet all program requirements.
- Maintains and monitors student records and program data for program evaluation.
- Creates and confirms invoices with school districts to ensure correct billing.
- Holds information sessions for participating high schools.
- Plans graduation events and other cohort gatherings as appropriate.
- Develops and distributes appropriate documents for staff, students, and prospective students.
Additional Duties
- Assists other advisors in other programs as needed.
- Assists in program presentations, tours, etc. for recruitment and outreach.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, communications, or related field
Experience/Training:
- Minimum (2) years of post-secondary and/or high school academic advising experience
- Experience with public speaking and/or facilitating workshops or other enrichment activities
- Intermediate skills utilizing Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education or related field
- Experience advising high school students
- Experience in the design, organization, and execution of workshops and/or other educational and cultural enrichment activities
- Experience working with at-risk populations
- Experience working at a community college
- Bilingual in Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, or other language that meets community needs
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of high school graduation and college curriculum requirements
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to admissions
- Ability to work professionally and collaboratively as part of a team
- Knowledge of the Family Education and Privacy Rights Act (FERPA)
- Ability to problem solve
- Knowledge of basic record keeping
Supplemental Information:Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a computer terminal. Visual eye strain and repetitive hand/wrist motion for data entry and keyboarding functions. Occasional local travel and evening hours required.
Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
