This MPhys Physics with Astronomy degree covers all aspects of astronomy over 4 years. It will prepare you for a range of careers in physics or fuel a life_long passion for the subject if you choose a different profession. As well as investigating awe_inspiring astronomical events, you’ll study advanced physics. You’ll be taught by academics directly involved in world_leading research.

You’ll study in our labs and clean rooms and use our on_site rooftop observatory, equipped with 2 high_spec telescopes and CCD detectors for astronomy imaging.

There will also be a chance to spend a week using research_grade telescopes at an observatory in Tenerife.

You’ll develop an in_depth understanding of:

• the make_up, dynamics and environment of galaxies

• white dwarfs, black holes and neutron stars

• how radiation is produced and detected in a cosmic setting

• the space environment and space weather

• concepts of modern cosmology, including dark matter

If you’re a high performing student, you may also be invited to join our flagship Astrophysics with a Year Abroad programme. This 4_year, MPhys Masters course offers a unique opportunity to conduct research at the prestigious Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Boston, USA. It is the world’s largest centre for the study of the universe.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 36-38 Pass, with 38-36 points overall, with 19-18 points required at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) and 6 at Higher Level in physics. If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to complete an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate your competence in English. You’ll need all of the following scores as a minimum: overall score:6.5,reading: 6.0,writing: 6.0,speaking: 6.0,listening:6.0. Given Grades may vary based on the equivalency of your specific qualifications. TOEFL Overall score of 92 with at least 23 Reading, 23 Listening, 24 Speaking, 24 Writing.
A level AAA A*AA-AAA including physics (minimum grade A) and either mathematics or further mathematics (minimum grade A) or AABB-AABC including physics (minimum grade A) and either mathematics or further mathematics (minimum grade A). Successful applicants will be invited to visit the department and attend an optional interview. The optional interview may lead to a lower offer. A pass in the science Practical is required where it is separately endorsed. Offers typically exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking. Applicants who have not studied mathematics/further mathematics and/or physics at A-level can apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year.
