Program Specialist 2 – Education Navigator (Corrections Education)

SALARY: $43,716 – $49,116

LOCATION: Lynnwood, Washington

DESCRIPTION:

Edmonds College is accepting applications to fill the role of Corrections Education Navigator for the Correction Education program located at the Monroe Correctional Complex in Monroe, Washington

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Corrections Education, this position is responsible for creating pathways for incarcerated students in vocational programs, GED, or AAS-T degree programming, as well as supporting those who are seeking employment/education services upon release into the community. The Navigator will assist correctional education program incarcerated students in identifying a clear educational pathway and support the student through completion of their educational credential. Support services might include assisting students in furthering their education upon release from prison; assisting prison education program completers in job search and job referral to employment opportunities related to their training and qualifications; developing job opportunities for offenders with living wage job skills by working directly with employers who are interested in hiring former offenders.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Promote and present information on student education programs and pathways through offender orientations, Edmonds College classes, and/or in reentry workshops or events in all MCC complex areas as needed
  • Meet with students to discuss and identify clear pathways to completion in and out of incarceration including completion of college application requirements, FAFSA, and selective service requirements
  • Establish education and employment goals and plans for students anticipating release¿¿
  • Provide community program information to students
  • Serve as member of SBCTC state-wide Navigator community ¿
  • Perform other duties as assigned

This is a classified position reporting to the Associate Dean of Corrections Education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor¿s degree from an accredited institution in social services, education, career counseling, or related field or relevant work experience related to career readiness, career counseling, or career navigation OR equivalent combination of relevant educational and work experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of computers and common office software like email and databases
  • Understanding of student retention, placement, and other higher education practices
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an institutional environment
  • Ability to adapt or be flexible to changing environments and priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with multiple stakeholders including DOC college personnel, industry partners, students, and SBCTC personnel
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of Edmonds College and DOC
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, and community and technical college system
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Direct experience with the re-entry population.
  • Experience working in an institutional setting, such as prison, jail, or mental health facility.
  • Experience developing educational and employment pathways or resources for hard-to-place clients, and experience in referring to community resource services.¿¿

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in an office setting, and onsite/in-person inside of Monroe Correction Center. Work is typically performed in an office setting. The ability to use a telephone, personal computer, and other electronic technology is required. These duties require repetitive arm and hand movements including keyboarding, handwriting, filing, etc., sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. Work will be performed on-site in a correctional environment where the potential for violence exists. The employee must successfully complete the Correctional Worker Core training provided by the Washington State Department of Corrections.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. May occasionally include some evening hours.

COMPENSATION:

Salary range 42. Beginning salary is $43,716 – $49,116 annually, with progressive increases to $58,380, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options and more. Vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, 3 personal leave days, and 14 vacation days per year (incremental increases to 24 vacation days per year).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • You must document your citizenship or employment authorization within three days of hire.
  • Criminal background checkPrior to a new hire, a background check including criminal history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant¿s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.
  • At this time, Edmonds College does not sponsor H1-B Visas.
  • Must be able to complete a 3-to-4-week Department of Corrections CORE training program which includes self-defense techniques. This training may require being away from the local area and overnight stay.
  • Ability to work in a correctional setting, which includes being searched prior to entering the facility and complying with bringing in limited personal belongings.
  • Ability to travel locally/statewide. If using a personal vehicle, proof of driver¿s license and car insurance is required.
  • Complete, sign, and submit Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct
