Length of Assignment: Full-Time At-Will

Position Function

Serve as primary academic advisor in a variety of disciplines; apply proactive advising strategies; support students in meeting academic requirements; promote strategies for student success; serve as referral to other university services; facilitate communication between students and all departments; mentor and support early career academic advisors; collaborate with campus partners for programming and event development and facilitation.

Minimum Education

Master’s degree from an accredited institution by date of appointment.

Minimum Experience

Three years of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field in higher education.

Authorization to work in the US
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Experience

More than three years working in a higher education environment; familiarity with Ball State Curriculum; familiarity with Banner, EAB Navigate, and Degree Works.

Preferred Other

Ability to work with faculty administration and undergraduate students; ability to work in a collaborative environment and work independently; sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population; interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ranking: 1
    Meet with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues such as course planning and registration, major-specific requirements, and academic progress.
  • Ranking: 2
    Keep up-to-date information on university academic requirements, policies, and procedures as outlined in the undergraduate catalog and in departmental handbooks.
  • Ranking: 3
    Provide support to students in maintaining individualized four-year degree plans as mandated by the State of Indiana.
  • Ranking: 4
    Train students to interpret the Degree Works degree audit.
  • Ranking: 5
    Teach student success courses to students on academic probation/warning or at-risk of probation.
  • Ranking: 6
    Mentor new advisors on the use of proactive advising strategies and techniques.
  • Ranking: 7
    Participate in appropriate admissions and orientation events; serve as departmental liaison for new transfer students; work collaboratively with academic departments to assist in the evaluation of transfer course equivalencies.
  • Ranking: 8
    Promote strategies for success with students including time management, study tips, and participation in tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions; provide additional intervention with assigned students on academic probation.

    Create advising reports as requested by school administrators and department chairs using Banner, Argos, and Degree Works.
  • Ranking: 10
    Work collaboratively with faculty in providing effective advising services to assigned students.
  • Ranking: 11
    Serve as a referral agent to other university resources and services.

    Oversee the course transfer evaluation process.
  • Ranking: 13
    Perform other related duties as assigned.
