PURPOSE
The Admissions and Retention Coordinator (ARC) is a professional staff position within the Student Success Office (SSO) of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS) and reports to the Student Success Coordinator. The purpose of this position is to promote recruitment and admission of qualified students to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program and to ensure their retention to graduation. This position is essential to processing applications to the BSN program and in maintaining aggressive retention initiatives. The individual will work closely with the CONHS faculty, BSN Program Coordinator, Nursing Education Department Chair, CONHS Student Success Office (SSO), and the Associate Dean for Nursing to meet admission and retention goals.
This position will work 30 hours per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruitment – 5%
- Coordinating BSN student recruitment events and outreach programs on- and off-campus.
- Conducting recruiting/informational presentations at various events, including career fairs.
- Organizing open houses for the CONHS.
- Attending Island Days and other campus-wide events to represent the CONHS BSN
Admissions – 20%
- Attending the CONHS Admission Progress and Academic Standards Committee meetings
- Overseeing the processing of CONHS BSN admission applications including maintaining
- and securing applicants’ files and tracking the status of each applicant/student file.
- Processing and preparing the application files and coordinating the admission processes
- and follow-up communications.
- Assisting with organizing and facilitating new BSN student orientation.
- Assisting with ensuring admissions requirements have been met for entering BSN nursing students such as immunizations, City-Wide Hospital Orientation, and Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
Retention – 65%
- Attending CONHS Student Affairs Committee.
- Using an existing assessment tool to identify newly admitted BSN students needing additional support and providing the identified students with innovative individualized success plans suitable for their unique learning style and needs to bridge gaps in their knowledge and/or resources.
- Working with repeating and out-of-sequence students to foster educational persistence.
- Meeting one on one with students who are struggling academically and/or personally and referring them to appropriate resources when necessary.
- Working with faculty and SSC to provide programs to encourage success.
- Coordinating with faculty to ensure that educational retention efforts are carried out. This includes tracking assessment metrics and course outcomes o identify students needing supplementary support.
- Organizing/working with peer tutors and serving as a mentor to students who are having difficulties in coursework.
- Developing and implementing remediation strategies/materials as needed.
Operations – 5%
- Assisting with tracking data for Texas Board of Nursing and accreditation agencies.
- Providing nursing students with formal academic advising topics not related to coursework or degree-sequencing (i.e., motivation, self-efficacy, time management, coping with test anxiety, and setting goals).
- Maintaining case logs of interactions with students.
- Maintaining nursing student database to track student progress from time of application.
Representation – 5%
- Representing the CONHS at functions internal and external to the CONHS, as necessary.
- Participating in University efforts toward recruitment and retention.
- Assisting with the coordination and facilitation of CONHS events and outreach activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a Health-Related field.
- Two (2) years of related experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills and analytical abilities, is goal- oriented, and possesses the ability to handle multiple deadline-centered tasks simultaneously with much success.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Eagerness and ability to work collaboratively within a team of professionals who are dedicated to, and passionate about, nursing student success.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Social Work, Education, Psychology, or a Healthcare-Related
- Post-secondary education experience involving student recruitment, admission, one on one meetings with students, and retention.
- Student engagement and case management skills and experience.
- Experience with/Working knowledge of a creative content development platform (Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, YouTube, etc.), Laserfiche, Banner9, DegreeWorks, and Starfish
Salary Amount = $39,000/annually ($3,250/monthly)
- This position works 30 hours per week.
- This position is contingent upon grant funding.
